Dialogues in Space: Poetics of Place Specific Architecture – Wendell Burnette Architects

Hosted by Gallery of Shanghai Study Center, HKU

Wendell Burnette Architects is an internationally recognized architectural practice based in Phoenix, Arizona whose portfolio of work includes a wide range of private and public projects. The specific focus of the practice is concerned with space and light, context and place, and with the environment and landscapes in which we live. Through extensive research into the ‘art of building’ – the specificity of place and locally appropriate construction systems, materials, craft, and their infinite capacity to transcend mere construction, the work strives toward an architecture that is at once functional and poetic.

Most recently, his first full-length monograph Dialogues in Space by Oscar Riera Ojeda Publishers was released worldwide. The title of this book hints at how he thinks about architecture and the process he engages in its making. As someone from the American South he appreciated a well-crafted, well-told story as an important artifact of human experience. Naturally, he began to always imagine architecture as a constructed conversation, an inhabited story of sorts that eventually evolves into a continuous spatial dialogue between people, things, and time.

BERNARD TSCHUMI - ARCHITECTURE: CONCEPT & NOTATION

Hosted by Power Station of Art

Curator:Bernard Tschumi Architects

Venue:PSA 3F Gallery 6

Ticket Price:50

BERNARD TSCHUMI - Architecture: Concept & Notation

Bernard Tschumi: Concept and Notation explores Tschumi's work as a theorist, educator, and architect. At the core of his activity is a rejection of the conventions that assimilate architecture to the production of static form. Tschumi proposes an entirely different definition, starting from the inscription of the body and social activities into architectural space. Architecture, he insists, cannot be dissociated from the events that take place within it, and its production as a built project requires a concept-based approach. Hence, Tschumi explores new modes of writing architectural space—“notation”—so as to transcribe the interactions between space, movement, and action.

Inspired by the restless, questioning energy of May ‘68, Tschumi first taught and began his theoretical work at London’s Architectural Association. This early work introduces both poststructuralist thought and the neighboring disciplines of the visual arts, film, and literature into architectural theory. Most of his early projects were designed as theoretical manifestos that were synthesized in the drawing series The Manhattan Transcripts, which was produced when Tschumi settled in New York City in the mid-1970s. This research led to the landmark Parc de la Villette, followed by the interdisciplinary art school at Le Fresnoy, The Acropolis Museum, the headquarters and manufacturing center of Vacheron Constantin, and other projects allying concepts to their often remarkably beautiful materialization.
